The Southern Nationals is a series of tournaments throughout the South that concludes with the finals in a different city each year. You don't have to join anything and anybody can hold a qualifier.

Pelican Park, Mandeville - Snakes and Trash Cans (1 reply)

"The Pines" disc golf course at Pelican Park in Mandeville, La. now has at least 7 small trash cans at many of the tee boxes. We should avoid filling them up with beer cans since drinking on the course is prohibited. But please dispose of all other trash in the proper place.

Numerous snakes have been observed on the course, most of them water moccasins. Be careful in the ditch left of hole 2, the high weeds and woods behind 4 and 6 (long), and the weeds and woods on the right sides of 14, 15 and 16. David, Daniel and I saw one in the middle of the 16 fairway 2 weeks ago.

As of today, the course is set up in the short (Blue) basket positions. Soon we expect the Park to switch the baskets to an even/odd configuration, with even holes in the short positions and odd holes long - or vice versa. The new configurations will make for a better course.

There is a clipboard with paper and pen next to Hole 1. Sign in when you play the course, so the park knows how many players are out there.

Enjoy (except for the snakes)

Dear Southern Nationals Advanced Division,

June 1, 2013 was the start of a brand new season for the Southern Nationals. At such time, I made the decision to try my luck in the Pro Open division. The first tournament of the year closest to home was the freshly renewed Rock Bottom Open in New Albany, MS. By the way, if you get a chance, go down and play it, it's a great course. Nonetheless, when I arrived that morning, there was but one other person signed up in open. So I threw my name in the hat. In the end, 4 of us signed up for open. First round wasn't too bad, and the 2nd was rainy and crappy, but somehow I pulled off my 1st ever pro open win. Granted i didn't even shoot under for the tournament, AND didn't even shoot the lowest score of the tournament(shout out Dillon Gourley, great shootin' man), but i shot steady, consistent rounds and pulled off an improbable win. Between rounds, I had numerous people come to me and say, "man, if I had known you moved up, i would have played open with ya." So to the EIGHTEEN people that played advanced at the Rock Bottom Open I say this: MOVE UP!!! A few shout outs: Kudos to my guy Griff, who will be "Advanced for life!". To my guy Dean Lee, who, like me, is stuck in Open after the Rock Bottom. We're going to have a blast buddy. Shout out to Doug Pittman, i'm going to keep talking to you into coming to tournaments with me, and your going to have to play open with me. And to the entire Southern Nationals Advanced Division, I bid you a fond farewell. We had lots of fun, tons of laughs, silly stories, and great rounds together. Hopefully some day we will meet again in Pro Open. Until then, grip it and rip it, and bang some chains!

With much love,

How I Would Change the PDGA (4 replies)

I am beginning my campaign for reelection to the PDGA Board of Directors. I serve at the pleasure of the membership, and I want to present a very clear and detailed statement so members can easily judge whether they would like to vote for me or not. I also want to reach out to people who are not PDGA members.

I want to change the PDGA. I believe that the little people in our organization have been left far behind. I am talking about people who pay too much and about people who serve without meaningful compensation. This includes about 90% of our membership, 97% of our Tournament Directors and all of our State Coordinators.

We (the PDGA) have become like a giant vacuum cleaner that sucks enormous amounts of money (over half a million dollars in tournament fees in 2013) from local clubs and communities, and puts more than $300,000 into a few PDGA-owned events that are attended by about 10% of the membership. Thus the balance between top-down and bottom-up is all out of whack.

The next post in this thread presents a list of items that I hope someday to help implement. This would at least in part correct the imbalances noted above, and also addresses some peripheral issues. I will entertain questions and comments about any of these.

Do not respond here. I have posted this information on several discussion Boards, but will post answers only on one, Disc Golf Course Review. Look for the thread 'How I Would Change the PDGA' at the following address [www.dgcoursereview.com]

I need a great turn out for this tournament! There will be a raffle for some great discs, there will be good company, awesome prizes, and all for a great cause. My softball team needs uniforms, bats, balls, and the field needs a ton of work!!! The girls will be there selling food and drinks and are so excited to see female disc golfers ripping it up on the course. I hope this gets some of them hooked!!! So please come out and support this tournament!
