2012 Player Of The Year Awards - Results

Pro Men, Matt Orum - Matt with 18 wins in 23 events had another great year. He is one of the top players in the world, and always showed support for the Southern Nationals.

Pro Women, Michelle Cornelius - finishing with 18 top three finishes in 19 events, also held onto a 1 point victory in the points race last year.

Am Men, Philip Tait - Philip with 24 events and finishing 2nd in the points race. Philip is one of the nicest guys You will meet on the course, and is always pushing himself to get better. His attitude and dedication to the SN earned him the POY award.

Am Women, Dee Dee Fussner - finishing with 15 top threes in 15 events in her first year of tournament play. DeeDee then went on to Win the SNAC and finish 3rd in the SNPC. It will be fun watching this new face fight it out in Open Women in the future.

Sportsman, Brooks Newell - Just this weekend Brooks drove all the way from Baton Rouge to Mobile just to help with the SNPC, He stayed out in the hot sun spotting all weekend, plus brought several water kegs and tents for shade. Brooks has been along time supporter of the SN and was well deserving of the Sportsman Award.

Volunteer, Bill Tyler - Bill not only been one to help out TD's anyway he can at several events, but has also been the guy behind the camera taking thousands of pictures all over the SN. With so much time dedicated to the SN, He more the deserved the Volunteer Award.

Tournament Director(s), SouthSide - If You have ever been to a Southside events You would know why they earned this award. Very well ran events, free lunches that should be call buffets with the amount they cook, and huge payouts that have made the Smack Down one of the biggest events in the SN. Southside had simply done an outstanding job year after year.

So you guys want an award on just stats? Is that what I'm hearing?

Maturity and the player's treatment of our series should remain part of the selection, imho

And this is not a shot at Aaron or anyone else.....heck the "best" player already has his stacks of discs and trophies....

Back in the day these awards were considered for the "ambassadors of our series"........WAY back in the day there were Bud Hill awards in the Memphis area of the same nature - they usually went to the volunteersthat worked the most on the area courses, TDs that sacrificed thei time and efforts for the sport they love, and to the players that would take the time to teach younger players and expand the sport's participating audience.....

But I do agree that clarity of what the award is tailored for would be an improvement if provided by the BoD....

Aaron you really should have been given this award. Phillip did great this year, but you did better. Even though you did loss to a guy with a broken leg at the Acadiana Spring Fling. LOL!!!! I'm pretty sure that to those of us that paid attention Aaron was the rightful Am player of the year. Not just my opinion!

That was after your remark "nice try though". Was a rude before you made that comment? I appoligize if I took that the wrong way. I was just saying that doubles doesn't prove your skill. The point is, Philip doesn't deserve to be put down on his award that he won. If anyone should be upset, it should be Aaron. I didn't compete in the SNPC because i work on saturdays, its a long drive and i probably wouldn't have won lol. Not worth me taking off work. Nah I do not get upset over losing at disc golf.

The problem with this arguement is two words.....Aaron Sims

If this award was made to go to the Top am player of the year stats wise, then Sims should have won it. It shouldnt be based on personal feelings toward anybody. Aaron was the am player of the year. No disrespect to Phillip. He is a really cool guy but stats wise Aaron was way above anyone else in any am divisions

If you do not like disagreements then do not view the threads that have them. I like the fact that Lloyd has an opinion and isn't affraid to post it on here. Everyone isn't going to agree on everything. He has stated a flaw in the SN and it should be corrected. It should be more clean cut stats, specify how it is determined and what all goes into the awards. But the issue is, Wayne, when you get into it, you like to make personal shots at every opinion that you post. Which is not helping anything at all.

Doubles is not a good skill indicator. phillip had more individual wins. The guy you are saying should get the award won 1 individual tournament. Or possibly a guy that competed with lower competition. You should know that doubles is different because you played doubles with Sham and got first before. Does that mean you can compete in Open?
Well that presents two points, the first being that its call an "AM" Player of the Year Award and not an Adv player of the year award. Since the current "AM" player of the year award is given based on play from multiple divisions you should look at both divisions equally and how players fared in their perspective division. If its not given to the first place of Adv then why not look at the first place of Ams. Should there be an award for All Am Division and all Adv Divisions???

Second we all know that with stats like 34 events and 19 top 3 finishes that should be enough to take the award home, personal feelings aside. The gap between second and third in adv is extremely small. One could argue that third should have been considered given that he more top 3 finishes in less tournaments and they had the exact same winnings which to the naked eye means that third won better, more quality tournaments, and if given the opportunity to play as many as tournament as second place, third would have easily triumphed. And since you brought up score again, third place

Why should the lower am field even be brought up for player of the year? If the top guy in intermediate played advanced he wouldn't have done near as good or near as many points. Phillip played in more events than anyone in the intermediate field. If he played intermediate, I bet he would have won the points race and had more top 3 finishes than majority of the intermediates. The intermediate men should not even be in the running for am player of the year in my oppinion because they are not playing with the highest am players.

If you really respected phillip and liked him as a person, you wouldn't keep bringing this issue up.

On the scores issue, I have a higher rating than rivers in open. I am not near as good as rivers in my opinion.

I feel like the intermediate men division got overlooked this past season.

How is the POY awards actually determined? Just a vote by the BoD? Is it based on all factors points, events, top finishes? Or is it based on the BoD opinions and feelings towards certain individuals?

You also have this thing called Score that is on the players stats sheet and it states " The SN score is an attempt to try and determine who the top disc golfer in a division is despite the number of events they attend."

Top 4 Adv Scores
1) 34.26
2) 13.04
3) 15.61
4) 24.22

Top 4 Am Scores
1) 32.77
2) 31.95
3) 37.47
4) 29.29

Something seems obvious there

What about the idea of players voting on who the player of the years should be? Could be a weighted system of player votes and BoD votes. I know I spoke with Pat Barnes about this after the SNAC and I've heard him mention this on another thread, so can this be put into action?
