My family and I arrived to the Host Hotel early
Friday morning. It was inviting.
Clean and roomy. We liked it. I was so excited
to meet the other WDGA
members. I knew 3 other couples were staying there.
I was heading to the front desk to find out their rooms.
Just as I opened the door, a lady was standing there.
It was Cat Castleberry, from Kansas. We hugged and
ran off to find the others, Donna Raines and Cathy Mueller.
We had a mixed douples event planned for the afternoon.
That was a wash-out, literally. It poured down rain. .
A few of the members decided to play anyway. We just
played a casual game. We got soaked, really SOAKED.
We looked like wet rats. I know my jacket held atleast
10 pounds of rain water. We could hardly throw. So, we
played 9 holes and headed back to dry off. Friday night,
we had “Ladie's Night” planned. At the last minute, we
decided to let the guys in on the fun. So we all took
off to Applebees for dinner. The ladies at one table and
the men at another. We were there three hours...
just getting aquainted. It was a total blast!
Saturday morning we had the players meeting and
everyone loved the players packs. They had a
huk lab mini, a custom stamped tournament disc with
the WDGA image Logo on it,
some cool stickers, a coupon for $5 off of
Sassy Pants apparel, a DGA magazine, a lolli-pop,
a custom designed tournament program, and a custom
designed WDGA score card,
created by DG Guy, in their players packs.
There was supposed to be an additional
mini from Play It Again Sports in there as well.
Those however, never appeared.
We had a huge bowl of candy for halloween fun
on the sign-in table and everyone
grabbed a handful. It was yummy!! Off we went
to play our first round
of the First EVER, WDGA tournaments. What fun!
For the first round, I mixed up the divisions so
everyone could meet each other. We had 18 there to play.
Some from every division. The first round went quickly.
For lunch we had subway delivered. Good sandwiches!!
Second round, divisions were together. Everybody
played well. The rain was all gone and the sun
was coming out. We had a bit of wind to deal with though.
It was a challenging round for all. It was so cool seeing
the guys caddying for their ladies. I loved it!!
They did a great job.
Sunday was a new day. The weather was absolutely beautiful.
It was sunny and clear with no wind. The morning
round flew by. The DGA Basket Toss Raffle was
going on between rounds. $1 per throw. The 'special disc'
had to land inside the circle drawn around the basket
in order to receive a raffle ticket. It was exciting
and many took a shot at landing in the circle.
The raffle prizes were: #1. a DGA MACH LITE portable disc golf basket.
#2. a custom designed t-shirt created by
Jennifer Kuehle (wdga member) [www.discgolfscorerecorder.com]
#3. a hand crafted stainless steel bracelet with the WDGA on
it, created by Leslie Charles from Michigan. #4 a $25
gift certificate to the Ocean Breeze restaurant.
#5. $20 gift certificate for Sassy Pants Disc Golf Gear and Apparel [sassypantsgear.com]
After the last round we were off to the Awards Ceremony.
At the advice of Redan's local discgolfers,
we held it at Blenderz II, a bar and grill in
Snellville GA. We drank cokes and ate burgers
and took pictures. Everyone loved-loved the
trophies that Ginger Tannock hand crafted. Way to go!! Ginger!
I paid out to the third place with extras for the one who drove
their car the farthest to get to the tournament. More extras
for the ones that had been playing disc golf the shortist
amount of time... We had two members win that one.
Around 8 p.m. We wrapped it up and said our goodbyes.Bitter–Sweet.
Everyone headed home with smiles and tired feet.
All in all it was a great success!!

2006 "Tournament Review" by Cheryl Eldridge

I would like to start this review off with some well deserved “Thank You's”.
Thank you God for giving me the time, the desire, and the energy to do this.
If it wasn't for my Husband, Mike, I could not have pulled this off. Thank you
my darling Mike. . Ginger Tannock hand crafted the beautiful trophies presented to the
1st place winners. Ginger, you are a doll. Thank you so much. The Innova staff did
an amazing job on the Sponsor Discs. Thank you Innova. Discraft did an equally
amazing job on the tournament discs. Thank you Discraft. Of course a huge Thank You
goes out to the PDGA. Without them, none of this would have been possible. Thank you to all
the compassionate sponsors who stepped up. You guys are truly good-hearted. You really
helped to make this happen. A special thank you to Michelle Wall for coming to
my rescue with help on the tournament programs. I almost missed the printing deadline.
Thank you to my kind volunteers who helped me on tournament day. I was
a bundle of nerves. You got me through it. Thank you “Caddies”. You guys were all
perfect gentlemen to caddie for your ladies. I commend you. Thank you Secret Squirrel
Society for doing a great job on clean-up day. The course looked nice and clean.
Thank you to Dekalb County Parks and Recreation for opening the park
restrooms for us when the camper never made an appearance.
Thank you Dean Tannock. The disc you presented to me Saturday morning
filled my heart with confidence. Even though my personal game scores
didn't show it. LOL. Thank you to my precious children, Matt and Angel
who encouraged me through the entire planning process. And last, and most
important, THANK YOU TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE 18 DISC GOLFERS who
came out to play our very first Women's Disc Golf Association tournament.
You all are AWSOME!!!

I hope lots of you are planning to play the
WDGA tournament. Two things. Please
pre-register because this makes it so
much easier for the T.D. and all the helpers
to plan a successful tournament.
And.....Reserve your rooms at the
host hotel prior to October 10th
to get the reduced rate of $75 per night
at the Holiday Inn Express
(15 minutes from the course).

The "1st Annual WDGA Championships" will hold a raffle
on Sunday, October 29th after the last group comes in
and before the awards ceremony. $1 per throw. 1 ticket
per (throw that reaches the ropes). A ticket will be drawn
and the numbers on that ticket must match your ticket's
numbers. The winning prize is a DGA mach-lite disc catcher:

I am back home from Alabama. Barry is recovering well.
We had a nice visit. We stopped by GeorgeWard Park in
Birmingham for about 2 hours on Sunday. We met Tom Monroe
there. I asked him to give out some WDGA flyers. Nice guy.

Hi Addie,
He lives 30 minutes outside of Birmingham. We are leaving
tomorrow, heading there to visit him at UAB. Thank you for
the well wishes. My husband, Mike, is beside himself with worry.
Barry is his younger brother. I think he will recover fine.
We are praying.
It's a fine thing your mom did,- donating one of her
kidneys to a friend. She is a very special lady.

My brother-in-law is a casual disc golfer. He just started playing this year.
He lives in Springfield Ala. He was in a bad car crash and is in UAB hospital.
Just wondering if anyone knows him. I am not sure which course he plays.
His name is Barry Eldridge.
