By special request I am adding the Amateur Advanced Grand Master division (age 50 and over) to the tournament. The entry fee will be $40. This division will be for the older guys who would like to compete but do not feel that they have the skills to take on the pros. This will be a great opportunity for you young bucks to invite your dads to join in on the fun and play with guys their own age. As with all other Am divisions this group will be eligible for a players pack and trophy.

The players pack will consist of a custom full color Discraft Buzz tournament disc, a Discraft full color mini, a Discraft decal, a River Arts Fest T shirt, a travel toothbrush and a super bright 9 LED flashlight with batteries. This will be limited to the first 50 entrants so you might want to sign up early to be guaranteed a players pack. Snail mail only, please. Make checks payable to Disc Golf Tournament and mail to Gary Wagoner, 1558 West Churchill Downs, Germantown, TN 38138.

I am well on my way to having over $2,000 in sponsorship money. Last year I covered the $3/head rental fee on the courses, the $2/head SNDG sanctioning fee and paid out the Ams 101% and the pros 198% and that did not include CTP's and ring of fire merchandise. I hope to do the same this year.

I would like to thank Country Club Moving and Packing, Inc. for their $100 sponsorship. This evening the company owner, Cole Van Dyke, and I were at El Chapultepecs Mexican Restaurant sucking down Margaritas and listening to the Los Contadores Mariachi Band. I was telling Cole about this tournament and it turns out he used to play Disc Golf at Shelby Forest years ago. I asked if he would have any interest in being a sponsor and he handed me a C-note.

When my daughter Allison moved to Huntsville Coles people packed their rental truck and he arranged for a crew to unload it. They also moved my mother-in-law to her new digs here in Memphis: very reasonably priced with excellent, courteous service. If you have to relocate, whether across town or across the country, call Cole at 901-854-4477 or visit his website at www.countryclubmoving.com .

Some of you may have noticed that there are a very high percentage sponsors who contribute to this tournament year after year. To encourage their continued support I send them a tournament disc, comprehensive financial report and a thank-you card. The images preceding this post are last years card which was printed on glossy photographic paper. My intent was to show them just how many people were grateful for their contribution. It was very well received.

I will do the same thing this year so I am asking everyone to sign the blank page when registering and bear with me while I take a group photo immediately before the players meeting. To get as many faces in the shot as possible I will want a row of chairs behind the wooden cross-tie and a front row seated on the ground.

I would like to thank A.W. Parker, P.C. for their $100 sponsorship. Although Wes does estate and financial planning he is primarily a tax preparer. Not just a run-of-the-mill tax man, but an Enrolled Agent whose qualifications are vastly superior to those guys who have an arrow spinner on the curb dressed as Uncle Sam. You have doubtless seen those commercials offering to reduce you tax liability if you owe more than $10,000. These services are provided by Enrolled Agents who are vetted and licensed by the IRS to negotiate a reduced principal and payment plan for the tax payer often at a fraction of the original amount.

Wes is very reasonable with tax preparation fees. He will get you all the deductions you are due: no more, no less. You will not have to worry about being hauled into court for filing a bogus return. Whether you are in deep with the IRS or just want your taxes done right you might consider giving Wes a call at 901-794-3528.

I have great news: the bunkhouses will be available for the tournament! I spoke with the park manager, Jeff Davis, and he said that the dining hall and kitchen had been rented but the bunkhouses had not. Usually that is a package deal and since it is unlikely that the bunkhouses will be rented without the kitchen he is making them available for the event. Furthermore, he will only require that 10 people rent a bunhouse before opening up the second unit. 11 people = 2 bunkhouses, 21 people = 3 bunkhouses, etc.

The bunkhouses rent for $7.50 a night and you pay for this in advance at the main office. Here is the bonus: if you are an overnight guest the park entry fee is covered. So if you are by yourself (the entry fee is $3 a car) the bunkhouse fee is really only $4.50 a night, What a deal!!!

I would like to thank Webb Construction for their $100 sponsorship. Webb Construction is a medium size General Contractor in the Memphis area that builds a wide range of projects: educational, medical, commercial...you name it. The are building a multi-story medical building a few miles from my office right now. There work is always excellent.

Brad Webb used to be very active in the sport but marriage and children have rearranged his priorities. He has not forgotten his disc golf heritage. Thanks, Brad. I would love to see you in Wall Doxey if you can pull yourself away from domestic tranquility.

I would like to thank Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects for their $100 Sponsorship. Thie award winning company is one of the largest architectural firms in Memphis. Past projects include the addition and renovation to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, CBU School of Business, CBU School of Science, Memphis College of Art Dormitories, FedEx Main Screening Building, St. Georges Episcopal Church and the University of Memphis Law School.

I would like to thank Geotechnology for their $100 sponsorship. Geotechnology is an engineering company that specializes in dirt or, more specifically, soils analysis. When a building is being designed the geotechnical engineer will drill test borings, take the samples back to their laboratory and subject them to a series of tests to determine the soils characteristics. Based on the results and the anticipated building weight provided by the structural engineer Geotechnology will recommend a foundation type and associated bearing capacity.

Geotechnology provides a essential service to the design and construction industry as evidenced by their motto: From the Ground Up. They are very good at what they do.

I would like to thank Magnolia Bluffs Casino for their $100 sponsorship. Located in Natchez Mississippi Magnolia Bluffs is the newest casino in the state. It not only has a spectacular view of the river it hangs out over the river at the base of the bluff. To take advantage of the incredible vista it has something that is unique to casinos: windows.

Home to 580 slot machines and 10 table games it also has a tremendous buffet and a fine dining area that I can say from personal experience is on par with the best Natchez has to offer. Visit their website at www.magnoliabluffscasino.com or, better yet, visit the property.

I would like to thank Dewey Fowler and the rest of the Meeman Shelby Forest Sunday morning Disc Golf Benevolent Society for their $100 Sponsorship. The hard core guys, a half dozen or so, start playing at 8:00 am. The standing competition kicks off at 10:00 am. with 25 to 35 players. It could be singles or flip up doubles but its always fun. I really need to get out there more often.

Thanks guys and gals for supporting my Wall Doxey tournament. I expect to see all of you at the event..its not really that far: only about 35 miles from the state line. With your contribution the sponsorship money stands at $1,950.00 (One Thousand Nine Hundred-Fifty Dollars and no/100s USD). There will be more. Come get you some.

Hill Country Disc Golf how about doing a little fund raiser at your regular competitions? This tournament could be a real shot in the arm for your club so you ought to have a hand in it. I'll give you the opportunity to say a few words about your group at the players meeting. If a few of you guys want to assist me with sign-up, card checking, score posting, etc., I could use the help.

One thing I will not need help on is the Skins finale. Kevin "Landman" Land will be designing the holes and running that event. Kevin is the force behind the Shelby Forest Roc Run. Nuff said.

Before the 18th? Yeah, that's right. I will be driving to Wall Doxey Friday morning 9/20. I will get the funds out of the bank on Thursday 9/19 so that means the mail with any checks has to be delivered to my house before I leave for work and that would be the evening of Wednesday the 18th. The mail has been running slower than usual and if you wait too long be prepared to pay at sign-up.

I would really like to see a bunch of Grand Masters and Senior Grand Masters at this tournament. If you are over 50 and trekking two miles over a succession of 1,000 foot holes in the blistering heat doesn't really appeal to you then you might consider coming to Wall Doxey. These are relatively short holes largely through the woods where accuracy and putting can trump power and distance.

Two older guys have signed up so far. Who else plans to make it?

I don't mean to be a downer of the event but there is an event in florence and millington the same weekend.....This is going to spread out attendance for all of the events.
Re: Wall Doxey Rumble in the Jungle Sept. 21st & 22nd

Florence is right at 150 miles away so that doesn't give me any heartburn. Especially since it is not listed on the schedule so it can't be that well publicized.

The Millington thing is PDGA so they can do whatever they want. Their choice of dates is going to hurt them more than it hurts me because I'll be paying out 2 or 3 times what they will relative to entry fees.

I just think that will pull your memphis and some tupelo crowds away from your event. Wish I could make it but florence is to close for me not to go to.

I don't worry about things I have no control over. If the PDGA wants to schedule tournaments on top of established SNDG events there is nothing I can do about it. My tournament won't be the first time this happens nor the last. Maybe the PDGA is trying to discourage me from holding SNDG events. Who knows? Those who prefer one organization over the other will vote with their feet.

I threw some in the yard yesterday and felt no pain. See Doc this week and going to ask his blessing, so I may be able to make it. Two of my favorite courses on the same site, can't wait. As far as PDGA events scheduling their events in proximity to SNDG events can't be good for either group. I do not know for certain but I would say that this event has been on the schedule for some time. Shame this could of been avoided. Hope weather is great and a large crowd shows up to support the Wall Doxey courses and this event.

I would like to thank Danny and Barbara Daniels for their $100 sponsorship. What can I say about the Daniels' that hasn't been said? I consider myself blessed to call them my friends, Bud Hill is an incredible venue: a fantastic golf course and a magical place to escape the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. And its all free, except nothing is free. There are taxes, insurance, gasoline, insecticide, gravel, dumpster, porta-potty ad infinitum that has to be to covered.

There is an honor box by hole No.1. Then next time you play Bud Hill slip a fin or a sawbuck through the slot to help insure this little piece of paradise remains for years to come.

Danny also registered for the Pro Senior Grand Masters division.

Good post about the Hill, but "fin" and "sawbuck"???

I'm still kind of up in the air on this one, but leaning towards making it. Gary, what time does the second round typically start on Saturday? I know you can't know for sure, but based on your past experience maybe you can guesstimate.
Re: Wall Doxey Rumble in the Jungle Sept. 21st & 22nd
September 16, 2013 09:31AM
Thomas,

I guess I'm showing my age. Fin and sawbuck are old (apparently too old) terms for a $5 and $10 bill respectively.

I'm going to start the second round on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. That should allow plent of time for everyone to finish the first round, eat lunch and have at 4 hours of daylight left for even the slowest group to finish the second round. Tee time Sunday is 9:00 a.m.

I would like to thank my dentist, Dr. Mark Wiygul, for his $100 sponsorship. First the father and now the son have been taking care of my teeth for over 40 years, almost that long for my wife and a shorter time for my children. I can't remember the last time I had a cavity; maybe 15 or 20 years ago.

Last year I was working in Natchez, MS and broke a molar. I left the job site two days later and drove straight to Dr. Mark's office. I got there about 4:00 p.m. as he was seeing his last patient. It was after hours but he put me in the chair, took X-rays and told me he could save the tooth. He then proceed to numb me up, shape the tooth, make wax impressions and fit a temporary cap, in short, did everything necessary to have a crown fabricated and installed which he did ten days later. That's the kind of guy he is and the level of service he provides.

If you need a first class dentist Dr. Mark fills the bill. His office is located at 5340 Poplar Ave., 901-683-7771.

Robbie "Arkanshaw" Shaw is now pre-registered for the Pro Grand Masters division. If anyone else is thinking about sending in a check, don't bother. If you haven't mailed it by now it probably won't get to me in time. Please sign up Friday evening to ease the crush on Saturday. I will be at the canteen building by the old swimming area at 7:30 Saturday morning for late registration which ends a 8:45. Players meeting at 9:00 sharp.

I'm really looking forward to this weekend. The temperatures have moderated, there is a chill in the air in the morning, it ought to be perfect for camping. I will be out of pocket early Saturday evening doing the ciphering for the payouts but after that it will be party time. If you have a musical instrument bring it. There will be some picking and grinning Saturday night.
