The 17th Annual Lafayette Spring Fling ~ Saturday April 26th ~ Acadiana Park ~ Disc Golf Tournament and Extravaganza

Posted by jacques
The Acadiana Disc Golf Association and The Flight Club Disc Golf League proudly present

Louisiana's Largest Disc Golf Tournament!(per capita, HAHAHA)

Schedule and Format

Saturday, April 26th at Acadiana Park. Registration opens at 8:30 AM. A brief players meeting will follow the conclusion of registration and the first round will tee off at 10:00 AM.

Different divisions will play different tees for this tournament. Some will play from the orange (concrete) exclusively and others will play a mixture of gold and orange tees. Who plays which will be explained at the players meeting. As always, novices and juniors will play shorter "blue" tees on certain holes.

Tee time for the second round will be announced and posted at lunch, once all of the first round score cards have been turned in.

An awards ceremony will follow the second round once the final scores have been tallied. All CTP prizes, awards, merchandise and cash won by players will be presented at the awards ceremony.

Entry Fees

Pro Divisions

Pro Open - $50
Pro Women - $50
Pro Masters Men - $40
Pro Masters Women - $40
Pro Grandmasters - $40
Pro Sr. Grandmasters - $40

Am Divisions

Advanced - $30
Advanced Masters - $30
Am Men - $30

Rec Divisions

Junior - $20

Guaranteed significant cash added to all pro divisions and merchandise added to all am divisions.

Online registration through Disc Golf United will be up and running soon and will be offered as a convenience to our players. We will do walk up registrations Saturday morning. No cap and we will throw out temp holes if we get over 180.

Extras

Player's Packs

The first 150 players (all divisions) will receive a good looking, quality, FULL COLOR tournament tee shirt, something like this..

PLUS

The first 100 am & rec players (adv, adv mast, am men & women, nov, jr) will receive a tournament stamped disc and a tournament stamped mini driver.

Choose from 25 Bosses, Destroyers, TeeBirds & Terns in the new Innova GStar plastic with this stamp..

First come first served on which model disc you receive, choose from what's available.

Ace Pots

Vegas style, $1-5, one for each course. CTP throw offs after the second round if needed.

CTPs

Lafayette LOVES CTPs.

Already have enough stuff rounded up to put a CTP or Longest Putt prize on every hole on both courses, that's 36 chances to take home cash or merchandise.

Mini Basket Throw Off

100% free to all players!

Two throws with your mini, closest to pin takes home a brand new DisCatcher Mini basket.

Start working on your mini marksmanship.

Opposite Hand Opposite Grip Long Drive Contest

My personal favorite fun new thing to try.

It is exactly as it sounds - if you normally throw right-hand-back-hand, you're gonna throw for distance left-hand-fore-hand. It is funnier to watch than a dizzy distance competition and the discs don't go nearly as far.

Not exactly sure what the prize is going to be yet, rest assured it will be something cool.

Lunch

As usual FREE LUNCH!

Planning a good old fashioned coon @ss fish fry..

Fried Fish
Potato Salad
White Beans & Rice
French Bread
Dessert
Beer & Soda

Player's Party

It is no accident that this tournament falls on the same weekend as Festival Internationale, one of the largest 100% FREE outdoor music festivals in the world.

So of course we are gonna roll over to Festival after the second round and party the night away!

Check out the website for the entire lineup of musical acts, food, beverages & vendors.. Festival

I know where I'll be Saturday night, a stop at the Bon Creole's booth for a crawfish and spinach bowl, washed down with a beverage or two or three at the LA Biergarten and then over to listen to Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys at 9:00.

Friday Doubles and Sunday Doubles

Consider joining us for a round of doubles on Friday afternoon at Heymann Park. More info once the details are finalized.

OR

Consider sticking around for our regularly scheduled round of random draw doubles on Sunday morning at 10:00 at Pa Davis.

OR

Do both and play all 72 holes in Lafayete in one weekend, take in all that Festival has to offer and of course be our guest at the one and only Spring Fling.

Directions and Contact Information

Acadiana Park

From I-10, turn South at exit 104 (Louisiana Ave). Turn left on Alexander St. Acadiana Park is approximately 1/2 mile down Alexander on the left hand side. The parking lot is just past the playground, before the tennis courts. Hole 1 for the Ace Run is behind the bathrooms to the left of the parking lot. Outstanding Mr. Clayton!

Our next update will be brought to you by False River Fencing, but first I have to thank the company that is ALWAYS first to the table to support Disc Golf and out tournaments here in Lafayette...

Innova Discs are the Choice of Champions

You already saw that we have 100 G-Star tournament stamped discs in the player's packs for our am and rec players and 100 tournament stamped mini drivers too. We also have TONS of quality merchandise - discs, hats, shirts & towels - out on the course for CTPs and this is thanks to Innova's generosity and commitment to the sport of Disc Golf!

Update

First place in Advanced and Am Men win Innova Discatcher Sport metal baskets!

First place in Advance Masters (MM1) wins a Do-All outdoors cart!

As John mentioned above, online registration at Disc Golf United is up and running for players wanting to get signed up ahead of time.
Jacques will you need water coolers this year ?
@Brooks - Bring just a few with you, we've got enough to cover the courses at Acadiana. We'll put the ones you bring at the pavilion in the front so I can keep an eye on them.

Mini Update

Do All Outdoors no longer manufactures their GC01 model cart. Those are the same ones we gave away at the SNDC and the one that I use myself. It is also the one pictured above and the one I planned to order today for the tournament. All of the reputable online resellers are currently showing 'out of stock' for these.

HOWEVER

Do All is currently shipping their new "completely redesigned" cart to distribution warehouses to offer for sale "soon". I hope "soon" means I can get one in time for the tournament and I hope "completely redesigned" means it is still a quality product that works well for Disc Golf. If this falls through, I will try to come up with something comparable.

Lodging

Since this tournament is also the weekend of Festival Internationale, I encourage players to make their reservations as soon as possible if they are planning to stay in town for a night or two.

Many of you may remember the SNDC last year and the great job the Holiday Inn on Evangeline Thruway did hosting us that weekend.

Well, the property is now the Ramada Lafayette Conference Center Hotel but the same friendly folks still work over there including Lafayette Disc Golfers Shawn Johnson and Kenny Guillot so please consider favoring them with your business. On the web or by phone (337)-233-6815.

Sponsors

I handed out flyers a few Sundays ago at our regular doubles round and asked for everyone's help in rounding up sponsors for this event. Their response has been nothing short of extraordinary and thanks to their help, we have quite a list and some of these gave more than we asked..

Courses

ADGA and Flight Club players, maintenance days will take place next weekend (12th/13th) and the following weekend (19th). Trimming, mowing and some dirt and rock work at the tees are the business at hand. Please make it your business to attend one of these work days, the more the merrier.
I think I might come out of retirement again for this one. In fact I played 9 holes at Acadiana Park this afternoon; first time in 15 months. I heard a rumor that a certain Sr. Grand Master was out there earlier today getting ready for Mr. McVay!
Hey Joe it would be nice to see you again!!
Marvin is getting better tolerating his heel problem. May have surgery. He was able to play a 36 hole tourney a couple weeks ago. He hopes to make Spring Fling. We hollered at you as you headed down #1, but if you too deaf to hear Connie Robichaux hollering, you in bad shape. lol
Eh? Wish you had run me down instead of hollering. It would have been good to see you again.
Appreciate the biz shout-out; Ramada is overbooked that weekend. However, put me down for a giveaway; One Complimentary Night Stay

Lodging

Sean posted above that the Ramada is full and you may find other properties will be full if you wait too long. I encourage anyone coming to town and needing to stay the night to book their hotel as soon as you can. Tons of folks come to Lafayette for Festival Internationale and hotel occupancy will be through the roof.

If you find something online and want an opinion about it - safe neighborhood, convenient, etc, post on here or send an email and I will be glad to assist.

Tournament

Registration has been slow on DGU but I knew it would be since we are doing walk ups on Saturday. If you want to avoid what may be a long wait in line on Saturday morning, go to Disc Golf United and get it taken care of now.

We are over three weeks away and have already exceeded my expectations for sponsorship with more pending. This may be the biggest, best Spring Fling ever and that is a bold statement.

YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS TOURNAMENT.
Also, an unconfirmed Joe Todd sighting at Acadiana Park?!?!
Yes Jacques, we did have a rare encounter with the Todd Bird aka Mister Bogey on Saturday afternoon.
He said he was in training for the Spring Fling. That means we may others of the species senioritis grandiousis coming out of the woodwork for this one.
This is really looking like a major event.
Woodwork? Really? As in pests of some type? lol
Yep David...!'ll be more than happy to BUG you. I'm not working that weekend but...I hurt my shoulder playing Pickleball the week before and the doc thinks it's a torn rotator cuff. It is my left shoulder so I may still be able to play depending on the surgery date if it is necessary.
Really hope you will be able to compete Mr. Joe, some of us miss seeing you do what you do out on the courses.

Courses

Received an inquiry concerning tee assignments, specifically which pro tees will be played.

Last year, we mixed it up to include the "better" pro tees at Acadiana to challenge the players without creating a huge imbalance of timing between pools and that worked really well. It will be basically the same thing this year with a few minor modifications...

*gold = pro tees (all natural surface)
*orange = am tees (all concrete)

Pro Men, Pro Women, Pro Masters, Advanced Men

Ace Run Course

1 - Gold
2 - Gold (my favorite)
3 - Orange
4 - Orange
5 - Orange
6 - Orange
7 - Gold
8 - Orange
9 - Orange
10 - Gold
11 - Orange
12 - Gold
13 - Orange

16 - Gold
17 - Orange
18 - Gold

Duzee Course

1 - Orange
2 - Gold
3 - Orange
4 - Gold
5 - Gold (new pro tee & fairway under construction)
6 - Gold (longer basket placement under construction - all pools)
7 - Orange
8 - Gold
9 - Orange
10 - Gold
11 - Gold
12 - Gold

Time for a Spring Fling blast from the past.

2014 marks the 17th year of an April tournament at Acadiana Park. While it wasn't always called the Spring Fling, it has always been Lafayette's biggest event and the tournament I look forward to hosting more than any other.

Looking back 10 years, we find ourselves visited by Disc Golf legends Jay & Des Reading. Jay & the SN's very own Tony Bass tied for the win in open with Willy BT & Mikey K hot on their heels two strokes back.

On the ladies side, Des squeaked out a narrow 28 stroke victory over Lafayette's own Connie Robichaux.

In Am Men, George Hawk edged out Dwight Legrand by one stroke for the win. Dwight says he wants a rematch this year, HAHAHA.

Check it out for yourself.
Joe,
50% of all rotator and labrum tears heal themselves over time. Mine took 15 months. After a Kennelog shot mine slowly improved to where it is now 95%. Good luck with it. I can now throw over 400 feet again. lol. That's a joke. It is my left shoulder.
Des Reading is a classy, humble disc golf ambassador. My wife and I followed her at Texas States and she is great. She was looking at a 2 on a hole like the elevated basket on Duzee. Bad wind conditions and she got a 7. No temper or anger display. Just moved on. What skills. Amazing.
Des and Joy were in town for a convention several years ago and dropped by to play in one of our tournaments. A class family act if there ever was one.

I am hoping my shoulder won't need surgery. I had a steroid shot a the docs and that helped temporarily. Wow with steroids I may be able to throw 100 feet!
