(Houston, Texas) The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) would like to announce that the 2002 Pro Worlds Championships will be held in at the Tom Bass Disc Golf Complex in Houston, Texas from August 3th - 10th.
Houston's organizers have just come off from their 5th successful PDGA Supertour event, the Texas States Disc Golf Championship.
Most hosting cities have about 2 years advance notice that they have been selected. Houston's organizers may only have about 9 months to get up to speed, but they are promising to make it a memorable event.
For the first time in a long while, all four tournament courses will be at the single location of Tom Bass Park in Houston. The whole question of whether or not there would even be a Pro Worlds event in 2002 has been hanging in the balance for months. “Houston and its core group of volunteers just couldn’t stand to see that there might not be a Pro Worlds event in 2002.” stated one of the organizers. Our ability to host it, all hinged on our negotiations with the local county parks group to be able to obtain use of extra park space in order to install two extra championship courses. Houston had negotiated extra space to install a third course for this year’s Texas Disc Golf Championship, but further negotiation is still needed to secure enough space to install a fourth course.
The Radisson Astrodome has been tentatively chosen as the Host Hotel for the Pro Worlds tournament, and is located within 10 miles
of Tom Bass Park.
Opportunities for sponsorship and volunteer support of this year’s Pro Worlds are plentiful. A website for the tournament should be up soon at www.proworlds2002.com
