Wall Doxey Rumble in the Jungle - Sept. 24th & 25th

I want to get out ahead of the curve on this tournament and encourage players to put September 24th & 25th on their calendars. This is going to be an important event for several reasons.

First, due demographics and the marked increase in the number of courses in the Memphis area the Spring Creek Disc Golf Club disbanded last year. John Linton, who has been TDing the last several tournaments, wants a break and asked me to TD the event the last of which had only 38 players. The interest in this fine venue with two 20 hole courses is dying out and this tournament could breath new life into a park that once hosted the SNDG Championships.

Second, the State of Mississippi has all its parks under the magnifying glass and is looking at all options from outright closing to curtailing amenities. Wall Doxey has a new Park Manager, Jeff Davis, who supports disc golf and in turn needs our support. A good turnout will provide a noticeable revenue bump in access, camping and bunkhouse fees which will underscore the importance of the sport to the continued financial health of the park.

Third, Lyle Richardson retired this year. I want this tournament to commemorate and honor his quarter century as Park Manager and recognize his pivotal leadership in the development and support of disc golf in Wall Doxey State Park. My plan is to commission custom discs with Lyles likeness and dates of service for the players pack. Bill McCarty will be making the plaques which will have the same artwork as the discs. Lyle will be there at the awards ceremony. I know everyone will want to shake his hand and wish him well in his retirement.

In general terms there will be two rounds on Saturday and one round on Sunday followed by a skins match open to all pro divisions. I will try to arrange for food on Saturday since the park has now eliminated buffet style cooking. I will need a few volunteers to help me with registration, leader boards, score tabulations and am prize assembly. I would also ask for sponsorships from individuals and clubs with the aim to pay more out than was taken in entry fees.

So there your have it. I will post more information as I flesh out the details. Please put these dates on your calendars and make plans to attend. David Dunham and I did some trimming a few weekends ago and the courses are in fine shape. The weather will be cooler toward the end of September and a good time will be had by all.

Thanks, Mac,

And to all you other PGMs out there...Wall Doxey has relatively short courses where guile and trickery can overcome lack of a long arm. I plan on playing. I also plan on my company, CM Plus, Inc., putting $100 in the PGM division. If all you other PGMs out there can come up with a little sponsorship money and specify that it is to be put in the PGM division we could have an awsome payout.

Are you taking hole sponsors? Would be nice to see added cash to the PRO division seeing only 1 pro player attended the last event...i hope to make it...robby harris-pro

Absolutely I'll be taking hole sponsors. Details will be forthcoming.

Sponsorship money will first go to the skins and then, unless otherwise specified by the sponsor, to the pro payout. The distribution of that money will be calculated not only by the number of pro players but also by the entry fee. Since the entry fee for the pro open division will be higher than any other pro division they will be allocated the largest per head share of the sponsorship money in the payout.

Here's a suggestion..put all the pin's in the short position..create just 1 pro division..payout top 50%..the 2 or 3 long holes are all about placement and accuracy anyways with all the other hole's very reachable by anyone..

It is a short course but shooting under on turkey is really good.

The attached photo is a prize that was given to yours truly for a less than stellar performance in a ball golf tournament. I was delighted to get this DAL trophy and not leave the event empty handed. It brought a smile to my face then and a smile to the face of everyone who sees it now. A contractor friend of mine who had the bad luck to be in my foursome has his DAL trophy proudly dislayed in his office lobby.

I plan to present this bobble butt to last place in every division except for Jr. & Novice. I did this once before at a disc golf tournament and subsequently heard that one player was offended. If anyone finishes last in their division and does not want a DAL trophy just let me know before the awards ceremony. I want this to be a fun experience and not a source of embarrassment.

Ace Pots: There will be one $3 dollar ace pot for each of the 2 pools ($3 total to enter, no Juniors of Novices). The pot will be divided evenly among the number of aces in a particular pool. If there is only one ace for the whole pool, then that ace gets the whole pot regardless of the round in which it occurs. If there are no aces in a given pot there will be a throw-off after the awards ceremony.

Cash / Prizes: Pros will receive plaques and cash; Ams will receive players packs, merchandise and plaques.

Payout Calculations: The payouts will be computed algebraically based on a set percentage of any finishing place to its predecessor. Second place will be a lesser percentage of first, but all other percentages of subsequent places will remain constant.

Payout for all pro divisions will be 33% of the field
Payout for all amateur advanced divisions will be 40% of the field
Payout for all amateur divisions will be 50% of the field

Safari Six Skins: Immediately after the last scorecard it turned in the Safari Six Skins event will commence. The field will be the six players who have the six lowest scores and open to any Pro Open division. If, for example, there is a 7 way tie for the 6th place, the TD reserves the right to eliminate the 6th place in the skins to preserve a reasonable duration for this event.

Awards Ceremony: The Awards Ceremony will be held at Canteen room at the old swimming area immediately after the Safari Six Skins event.

I do not know what's going on with the Forum and why it is only accepting bits and pieces. Oh, well, I have most on the information posted. I will expand on a lot of the information over the next few weeks.

I have a flyer for the tournament ready. If someone at other clubs will pm me with their Email address I will send them a .pdf of the flyer for posting at their various venues.

Brad Webb is going to post the disc design for me. I have to place an order in the next few days to get into the manufacturing sequence. It would be nice to know how many people may want to purchase one. I have not received the quote back yet but the price should be around $11 each.
