Why are there not more big 1 day tournaments
May 10, 2013 10:39AM
I don't see why there not more of them. The Pot Of Gold and the SmackDown are only two . They are two of the four major events on our tour highly attend events. I for one can't attend two day events. They cost to much you have to get a hotel or sleep in a tent. What your thoughts on this? It's not that hardy to put a one day event on we do it we are a club. Just a group of guys that got organized .

What do you call big?

I call 70 or so people big.

I call 200+ water downed. Quality over quantity.

Only the coast are capable of drawing the numbers you speak of.

There are more one day tourneys than 2 day in SNs, yours and PoG are just more successful for several reasons, first both have momentum from years past, second you both do a good job of raising EXTRA cash through sponsors and the selling of discs, thirdly , it is put on by a GROUP instead of a one man show. Disc golfers have a tough time falling in and working as a team, not the nature of the sport or the people who play it. Your group came from a group that played together as a team and you guys have carried that through to running tourneys . Congrats, we are lucky to have you and you are well appreciated by MANY.... but not all of your groups tourneys are the equal of the SmackDown, and you know that!!! Many feel that a two day tourney shows the better golfer and that is why they do 2 days... keep up the good work and keep setting the bar for everyone else!!!! SOUTHSIDE...

What is quality of 70 people at a event 15 to 20 in your division half have no chance to win. No add cash so why drive 110 to 175 miles to play in that.

I call 70 people a toss or fundraiser. To me you have a toss or fundraiser to have a event you can be proud of.

Southside, your wrong. Usually the spring fling in lafayette attracts 130+ people at the events, but due to the sndc comming this year we scaled it down this year.

What am I wrong about ? I check it out it had nice pay out 9 grand for a hundred 115 golfers is good. There is not to many events that very good . To me I dive a long way if I win won't it worth it. So there are three not to. It dose not matter what event comes to mobile the smackdown is on we are not a club. Red helps us on tournament day Willie dose to.You don't need the club get involved to have a big event. There is so much stuff with the club's . Who in charge who did this who did that. All I'm saying is I know there people out there that do what we do. People say they won't do something all the time. I'm putting anyone down I just the SNDG can do better.

I checked it out.
That tourney had a nice payout of 9 grand for 115 golfers - which is good.
There are not too many events that good.
To me, if I dive a long way and I win, I want it worth the drive.
So there are three not two.
It does not matter which event comes to Mobile, the Smackdown is on. We are not a club.
Red helps us on tournament day. Willie does too.
You don't need the club to get involved to have a big event.
There is so much stuff with the clubs, like who in charge and who did this and who did that.

Its nice to have a 2 day event so not everything is crammed into 1 single day that starts at 730am and does not end until 8 or 830pm, that is too long if you drive like say 400 miles to mobile, payout does not a quality tournament make, you can have a crap tournament with a high payout, doesnt make it any less crappy

Our Spring Fling took a little nap this year because of the SNDC. Next year it will be back with a vengance.

Don't discount a city's location in the SN "territory" when looking at the numbers - far west, east and north make it harder to draw from the major population centers & the geographic "middle".

I don't call 6+ people per card a quality event.

Glad you think pretty much every tournament ran in Mississippi is a toss.

I agree with the one day event being my choice, although I do like the semi new trend of people throwing a sunday tourney the day after. If people want to stay another night can and if not can go home. With that maybe even two different courses getting played. Great options with that!

The Buhlow Glow throw should be on above list, our payout per person was $35 for 29 people, thats 1032 in payout for a 29 person tournament
For once I agree with Dillon on something, 7 people per card, pretty much disqualifies you from the quality tournament category

Tournaments that get 7/card already has a reputation for being s great tournament. Most all that show up this these few and rare tournaments already expect that type of day on the card. These tournaments are already set in stone as premier tournaments. People still show up even after knowing this. Is it because they give away free money?? No, but it might be because it already is a quality tournament before the tournament even is played.

I like both one and two day tournaments. I like the one dayers for close drives but if I am driving a good ways I would rather stay and have 2 days

On the 6-7 people a card, I have been to the smack down one time and wont be back. Nothing against the guys that put it on or the courses but I didnt have fun and I got 2nd out of like 70 int ams. I was miserable the whole time trying to play on 7 person cards. I agree with quality over quantity! If you want that many people there then use more courses or something.

Discs, shirts, prizes, but mainly I come because it is SO HUGE.... I get to see a lot of my disc golf friends and family and hamgout. You can say what you want but in the end its everything!

Re: Why are there not more big 1 day tournaments

I say its pay out and being able to play against a big field.
Re: Why are there not more big 1 day tournaments
May 13, 2013 10:52AM
payout, big field, friends and making new friends ... all play a big part in why people will go to the already bigger events. The "we won't cap the field" trend needs to get looked at though as well as some serious consideration to pre-registration only as this will keep the late starts down and make sure to keep it to a 5 person max card size. I was one of the folks that was trapped on a 7 person card both rounds and by the 2nd round and putting up with 4+ hours rounds of circle jerk "I go first, no I think I do cuz I had a birdie 5 holes ago" crap I was over it well before the 2nd round ended. Not to mention no-notice course changes when you've been mentally preparing for another and several other issues that having 3 courses available will help mitigate BUT ... at least consider caping the field and pre-registration only OR at a minimum a 7:00 - 8:00 at the latest cut off the day of AND STICK TO IT. no one coming in at 10 till 10 and signing up.

just some things from my first Smackdown experience. If any consideration is given to the above inputs I may give it another shot next year but if it's another seat of the pants free for all on tourney day again, I'll likely not attend.
Re: Why are there not more big 1 day tournaments
May 13, 2013 12:23PM
3 x 90 = 290 , that will solved the problem for next year for sure!!!! But it does mean that one pool will NOT get to play South...... could do Saturday ams and Sunday pro and you would only need 2 courses. Whatever you do, It will still be a great event as ALWAYS.

Let me know if you get 211. How many times did you go in road at south? If I shot 24 over I would just quit disc golf. But send me your address and will send you a few disc . Might help or post a video maybe I can help with your form. No way you had any fun at 24 over.but when it is all said and done you spent more time in the woods with the squirrels than actually playing

Who would have thought that hosting pulling 200+ players every years was a bad thing lol.

If You guys don't want to play on 7 man cards then play Advanced, we don't mind a few extra players.
