Posted by Addie
LONG TITLE, I know, but had to include the main points! :o)

Just wanted to give everyone a "heads up!"...

Huntsville is hosting a Lance Armstrong 24 Hr. Disc Golf Marathon on July 30th-31st (6:00pm-6:00pm) The course chosen will be UAH. We have some rooms reserved at the Tom Bevill Center, on campus, for those that may need a "catnap".

Team Jerky, our local disc distributors and friends, will be running this event with MANY added surprises!! Dan Kleis, just ONE of the "Jerks" :o), will be giving details shortly....

Be watching!!!
details ... hooray .. the earlier the better... sounds very unique and fun ... might be able to make it .

Details, details, details... Alrighty then, here are the facts as we know them today. We, Team Jerky (<--not a typo), have received the official okey-dokey to hold a true 24-hour marathon at the historic UAH DG course. The details of what the national series of events is all about as well as loads of info about the charity can be found at www.discgolfersforcancer.com. Just a couple small notes about the H'ville event.
1) The $5 designated as club funds from the players' packs will be donated directly to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, doubling it to $10.
2) Since our event will be on the final weekend, we need to have our orders for players' packs in very early; June 24. Please sign up before that date if you want an official player's pack. (We hope to put together an alternative package for later entrants with a similar value, but we strongly urge everyone who wants to play and support this cause to sign up early and be counted.)
So far, the response has been awesome and we have participants from AL, MS, and TN (any others out there? we will have a longest roadtrip award...).
(Short switch to serious mode..) In the few weeks that I have been gearing up to host a charity event, I have not met one person whose life has not been touched by cancer in some way. I have been told of family members, friends, and co-workers who have contracted cancer. Some of these stories are of survivors, and some, unfortunately, are not. Personally, one of the best friends I have ever had (and one of the most truly good people I have known) lost his 5½ year battle with cancer just 8 weeks ago. Given very poor odds of leaving the hospital when he was first diagnosed, Don not only left the hospital, but led a very active life for over five years. His spirit and his drive will be with me for the rest of my life.
That having been said, we plan to have a very good time with friends and fellow disc golfers to benefit a very good cause. we will have several mini events including a midnight "pick your partner" doubles and a "breakfast scrambler" to name a few. The emphasis is definitely on fun and fundraising, but we will have some fantastic prizes available, and everyone will have a chance. We already have some gorgeous dyed discs (Thank you, Jim) to hand out to lucky (or skillful) participants. We also have a special exhibition on tap with at least one of the local professional sports teams competing in field events and golf (more team info as we get commitments, but guaranteed fun!) Well, I've run on enough, but feel free to contact me at tjsports@knology.net or via phone listed on the website above.
Thank you,
Dan Kleis

Thanks, Russ. If you will email me your snail mail address, I will send you one of these really sharp looking posters to put up. I can also send a bunch of sheets about the charity and sponsor/pledge sheets, If you have a group over there hwo you know will be coming, let me know and I will put a bunch together. We also had some buttons made up for players who have already signed up. They're real official looking and seem to help in collecting pledges and sponsors. Remember, the top five individuals who raise the most money nationwide will win DisCatcher portable basket. Anyway, gotta go. Looking forward to seeing everyone again in July.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and issue a challenge. I will kick $5 bucks into the kitty for every player who can beat my time plus strokes score during the 24 hour marathon. Right now I think my personal best is somewhere between 80 and 85. That's golf score plus 1 for every minute it takes you to get around the course. I'll be working out between now and then so I expect to make it better at the event. Bring your track shoes!

Sorry Russ,
I just realized that I didn't give my address when I told you to email me. oops. You (or anyone) can send questions, comments, etc to the address on the www.discgolfersforcancer.com website or, better yet, to TJSports@knology.net. Sorry bout that.
Dan

BTW, thanks to everyone who has sent in their registration and money. The trickle is turning into a stream, and hopefully into a river by July!

Thanks very much to everyone who has already signed up and ordered players packs. Just a quick note to let those from out of town know.... Since we are the last weekend of the June/July window for the LA marathons, we will have to order our players packs very early. We will place one order the end of this week and another final one in two weeks. We also just got confirmed that we will have teams from several of our pro sports teams here in Huntsville competing on the disc golf course to help raise money and media attention. More surprises to came as we get closer. - Dan

Dan, my check is in the mail. Thanks a lot and see you there.

By the way, where are the pro team events going to be held on the course?

I wouldn't mind checking that when we get into town.

Thanks Doug. I enjoyed speaking with you and look forward to a strong contingent from the South.
The exhibition event will be 10:00 am til ?? We will have at least three of the pro sports team from Huntsville competing in field events and golf at UAH (MTA, Accuracy, Distance, and 6 holes of golf). This will definitely help us with media coverage and should help get more people to stop by and see what we're all about.

Looks like We've got a B'ham coordinator:) Do I hear anyone from Florence? Memphis? I know that Russ and Griff have expressed interest in attending. I have some new posters that look great. Send me an email and I will get them in the mail immediately if not sooner. I can't say thank you enough to all the people who have offered their support for this event. It's going to be a BLAST! ( <-- not meant in any way to infringe upon the RCCG B-tier event )

I went out and benchmarked my time and strokes in the rain at UAH today. 59 strokes in 27 minutes gave me an 86. I think I can get it under 80 for the challenge. Bring your game and your running shoes and see if you can catch me. $5 to the foundation for evey player that beats my time and strokes score..

Hey Dan & co., just wanted to let you know that Viktor and Kris and probably Joe are coming with me so please save them a pack if you can. Checks in the mail. Tom should be up there as well and I'm working on a few others. Sorta of the wait to the last minute syndrome at work.

Looking forward to it,

Doug

Question fellas....

The last day of the month is a killa in the world of real estate....my ?? is: suppose I can't make it to Huntsville until AFTER the fun is well underway(i.e. 10-11 pm or later depending on how quick I can close the office down)...will I be at a disadvantage in terms of play??

I want to go to the event...I don't think I'll have sponsor issues, but I wanted to figure all this out as I've never been to an event like this.

It sounds like you can take breaks and participate at will...does this mean I can show up late too??

Thanx...

Griff

Griff, we're not getting there until Saturday morning so I say " Come on with it" - Look forward to meeting you. This event is all about fun. Play as much or as little as you like. While you're there play some of the other courses in Huntsville too. Bring some of your friends and maybe we can have some city vs. city competition.

See you there,

Doug

p.s. just be sure to get your players pack - candy disc, hat, stickers

The website for the event should be live within a few days. The schedule of events and corporate sponsorship levels will be there as well as a roster of players. Plenty of surprises to come. Thanks everyone. This is going to be GREAT! Bring your game faces, cause the media will be swarming. :) I've got a face for radio and a voice for newspaper, so I'll need plenty of diversions.

BTW, Checks can be made out to Team Jerky.

This is a COOL EVENT! Looking forward to it. I have set a goal
for myself. I am NOT going 24hrs,but my goal is 10 rounds in the
24hrs. I will try 2 rounds Friday and 8 on Saturday. I will
challenge other Master age players and higher the same goals.
Lets get some bag tag rounds going too! This will be fun and raise
some funds for a GREAT CAUSE! I would like to play some golf and give
tips for those that want it. If you dont mind learning from an OLD guy!
If you see me on the course and want to join in,come on. Although
groups of more than four will probably slow the goal down. If ya
know what I mean. With all that golf your bound to get rounds in
with folks you want to play with.
