April Fool Fling Results
April 13, 2003 07:37PM
Just got in from Tupelo, calculated the results and here they are!

We had beautiful weather, and Seventy-Three Pro and Am Players show up to compete for over $2000 in cash and prizes. One of the biggest in this fine park. We had 16 Open, 4 Grand Masters, 3 Open Women in the Pro Divisions, 17 Amateur Men, 8 Advanced Masters, 10 Advanced, 9 Amateur Women, 4 Juniors, & 2 Novice players to round out the field.

Our "Disc Golf Road Warrior" Plaque went to Dicky Maxwell who drove from the other side of Little Rock Arkansas to compete, his wife, Lori (formerly Mezger) would have won, but Dicky sleeps on the side of the bed farthest from the course. . . Lori says she is planning to re-arrange the furniture whe they return!

If you were not able to make it, you missed a lot of fun, and a lot of stiff competition, there were two ties in the Open and Advanced Divisions, don't tell me they were not fighting it out!

We had a GREAT weekend, lots of really good competitve Disc Golf, good food, and, in short, a good time for all. Todd Alexander scored a 2 under on the "arm stretching" Final 6 to take the overall in the Open Division and $261. Total Pro Payout was $887, Ams Cashed for $1280 in prizes. Onlyu had two winners saving their vouchers for another day as they could not find "just what they wanted"

Please. . . remember. . . if the TD of an event does not know you are coming, it can be very difficult to be absolutely sure there is an abundance of prizes available. Monitoring the posts on this event, there were only about thirty of the seventy-three contestants who let us know they would be there! I n my humble opinion, I feel it worked out just about as good as it gets!

I would like to thank all of you who attended, and to invite you all to the Fall Classic which will be held September 6th & 7th (the Sixth is my birthday, and I plan on having a good time in the "Condo". Park can take your reservations NOW so you will not be left out. Show your support for Mississippi State Parks. . .they go it goin' on. . . .

It really was a great weekend for disc golf at Tupelo. If you dont think that the sport is growing, look at the numbers that were there. I dont know of a bigger turnout here before. The tournament was definitely a success. Hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

I got big props for Fair and Stephen. (Here is where I exclude my comments about sandbaggers) The practice really pays off. Good job to you both. We are starting to get some great players in North MS and I hope that we can help support the sport and extend our playing area to those of you that we haven't gotten to play with yet.

Thanks to Lori Maxwell for helping my wife as well, she is fired up and ready to go try some of your tips.

Thanks Addie and Print for the congrats! It was a great tournament, and the weather was absolutely georgeous. No better circumstances for shooting good scores to be had! Everyone needs to make room in their schedules for the Tupelo Fall Classic. We will be playing two courses by then, and I promise it will be more fun than staying home!

Good tournament. Good people. Good weather...can't ask for more(except more dueces and fewer circles on my scorecard).

Griff, do those points (matt's) count toward advanced total rankings? I didn't think that they did, but of course I thought we shot 14 down too ;)
Which I still think we did. LOL
Re: April Fool Fling Results

I don't have an opinion about the -14...hey ya'll are club members!!

His points do not count for totals in advanced...they are Pro points.

My point was...since he cashed in Pro and, according to the Pensacola post, accepted cash, then he is supposedly no longer eligible to compete in the advanced division (see Tony Bass, Stephen Heaps, etc.)

I think it's great those players have the game for the Pros....I know I sure don't....but someone help us out with this points race thing....I know you can collect points in Am and move to Adv. and your Am points do not follow with you. I do not, however, know if when you leave/move up a division whether you are still considered as in that former divisions point race???

Matt O. has certainly got to be considered as the most improved player of the year no matter how it all works out!!! Go Matt!!

Any answers on this Jim O.? or "others in the know"???? Griff
As I understand it, anyone who earns points in a division, keeps those points for the season, but they do not transfer across divisions.

So, to use the young and talented Matt O. as an example, he has 129 points in the Advanced division. At P'cola, he played Open and earned Open points (as he has done in the past). This time, however, Matt (apparently) accepted the cash, so he would no longer be eligible to play in the Advanced division. He does get to keep the Advanced points he has already earned but he can climb no higher in that race. He's currently in second place; some of the other Advanced players have to step up to displace Matt O. from that position.

We had another great time at Tombigbee, the course looked great, Bill and Mac, as always, ran a good tournament. I turned out to be bag tag chum to those Memphis sharks.

Robbie,

If you had a Memphis Bag Tag you could really gig the Memphis PROs in the May Tournament by taking a really low number home with you. ;)

little matt-o a pro , he has chosen to move up to pro and yes once you have taken cash that it for that year, the only way you could go back is if you wait til the next year and you really went backwards as a disc golfer. players that hurt themselfs are been out of it for a while could move back down . but for most part most will stay pros. i hope he has made the right move . he thought about playing a few am worlds but there is only one champ each year and he decided to play pro and move on.maybe a few more will follow. so all you advance players will have to move up if you want to whip up on little matt-o. see you in birmingham or bud hill , jim

on the points , all points stay where you earn them , also remember matt played in gainsville and was 3rd out of about 50 and they have not been posted yet , good luck to all, jim
Jim, the points for the Gator Country Classic (Ams) have been posted, according to John Kittrell. He posted this in the Gator Country Classic forum in late March:

JK: "The points are posted for the Ams Country Gator Classic held in Gainesville, FL 22-23 Mar. I'd like to thank Shawn Harrigan for running the tournament (PDGA B-tier) and pushing the SN envelope farther east in Florida by making it a SNQ. Only 7 of the 90 players had played in a SN tournament this season. The big winner was Matt O who came in 3rd and gained mucho points on the field (sorry Fair)."

The tournament is not listed in the Tournament Results section, but the Am points have been posted.
Hello Print & Robin

I am glad I could be some help. Catch me before a tournament on a friday at a course and i will help more. It's hard to coach and play at the same time. Hope to see you at wall doxey.

I just want to say one more time before this thread dies how much fun the Tupelo spring fling was. The weather was absolutely incredible. Last weekend during the tournament was the first day anyone from Tupelo could remember that the wind wasn't blowing on the road holes since last summer. The turnout was a record crowd for a Tupelo tournament. The scores were great in every division, and fun was had by all!
Everyone who missed it needs to make it to the Tupelo classic this fall. We will have the new course in play by then, and hope to play at least one round of the tournament there.
