The New Forum
April 27, 2003 11:40PM
I upgraded the forum software for a number of reasons. First, this new verions allows you to register your name so others can not post as you. Don't worry, I will fix anyone who gets hijacked. Second, it has much easier moderation features so messages can be removed with ease when they need to be. Lastly, this is the latest version of the Phorum software. Phorum is the reason this server exists. It is a message board application that I started in 1997. It is downloaded and used over 8000 times a month. So, you guys get to be my test subjects in a way. I will post another message explaining the differences between the old and new. Enjoy.

I like the new Boards format, Brian. It has some needed new features. I do miss the coloring of the topic list and the "new" besides the ones that I haven't read though. Makes it easier to see whats recent.

DG Guy, did you register your username first?
Re: The New Forum

my dots stay red, even after i read the thread.

a poet and didnt know it.
Re: The New Forum

If you hit reload, the red dots turn hollow for the threads you have read. If the thread has multiple pages, you'll have to click once on each of the page numbers. You don't have to read them all, just click, then go back. You would only have to do this one time for each thread with multiple pages. After that, you'll be "caught up" and red dots will indicate new messages since you last read that thread.

PS, clicking on "Forum List" at the top of the threads (next to "Goto") will also update the red dots.

Greenwood,

Your browser will cache pages which will not allow the dots to change. Especially if you use the back button.

GOBY- i assume you meant refresh. thanks

BRIAN- i have been using "forum list" instead of "back".
refreshing after i read a few threads is the only way to turn my dots hollow. (that i know of)

love the new board, just computer illiterate!

Hey Brian,

Is there any way to have the responses, to the threads you post, emailed to you?
Like before when you could "check" that box at the bottom of your post?

Jonas, dillhole, if you weren't logged in you couldn't be posting. Apparently you got a cookie and you are logged in automatically when you get here.
Re: The New Forum
April 29, 2003 11:39PM
No, you can post without being logged in. Although, I did get a message to the contrary yesterday. I can not reproduce it though.

You just can't grab up your name if you do not register.

Jonas, what browser are you using?
Re: The New Forum
April 30, 2003 01:38PM
I have noticed for the red dots to work, I have to be logged in. If I just come in and read the list, the dots do not work.

Can't seem to get this log in thing going--it even says (when I ask for you to send me a password) that it cannot find my e-mail address...

A little help for the computer illiterate required...Thanx in advance...Griff

I'm sure now, that I have likely screwed everything up as far as registering...pleased help.

Probably just clear out my crappy attempts at registering and I'll try it again later. Thanx Griff (in need of a "clean slate").

Griff, I had it send you a new password. Let me know how it goes.
