Re: Question

Please refer to the following request I have copied & pasted above & below. BTW I still have never received a copy of the original bid or any other info as to which weekend was supposedly reserved.

"Maybe the best idea would be for you to send me a
copy the original bid they placed. Which date the
SN has reserved. & the specific guidelines for
running the SNDC. Also please include the SN
financial report, at least the part concerning
doubles tourneys, so that I know what to expect
from SN."

Thanks,
Bernie Sawyer

Re: Question
May 06, 2014 04:37PM
Bernie, this is the information that I see out of the SN Handbook and the SNDC Guidelines that refers to the date of the SNDC:

Handbook: "The Southern National Doubles Championship (SNDC) is typically held the last full weekend in July"

Guidelines: Nothing

So, unfortunately, there really is no set policy for the date of the event. I guess that it has just always been assumed that the last weekend in July was the date of the SNDC and that the board needed to approve any change of date from that weekend. This is another example of why I would like to review and revise the SN Handbook and the SNC Guidelines after the 2015 SNC host sites are decided upon at the end of this month.

The term "monkey screwing a football" comes to mind with this entire mess!

The monkey & the football will be at Blue Angel for the SNDC.
Re: Question
May 06, 2014 05:40PM
& I would encourage the SN to exclusively reserve weekends in advance for ALL of the SN Championships! No matter who is hosting or where they are.
Re: Question
May 06, 2014 05:56PM
After further review, the SN handbook does state this:

"5.2 The following dates are protected and may not be used for any other SN Qualifier Tournaments (may be waived by the SN Board based upon request).

5.2.1 The SN Doubles Championships (SNDC) - the last full weekend of July.
5.2.2 The SN Amateur Championships (SNAC) - Mid-August, two weekends before Labor Day weekend (if combined with the SNPC will be held on Labor Day weekend).
5.2.3 The SN Pro Championships (SNPC) - Labor Day weekend, typically the first full weekend in September."

So the SNDC does have a protected date.

Re: Question

Not trying to start an uproar, but why are the people who placed the bid not answering any of these questions? I mean it's right there in black and white to read in the handbook. A different date was used last year and the hosts worked around to make sure the dates were clean. From what I'm reading, looks like Bernie was handed a mess that he didn't know he was being handed.

SN Tournament Application....

Thanks for making your tournament a Southern National Qualifier. The Southern National fee each tournament is $2 per entrant (excluding the Juniors and Novice division). The $2 fee collected from each person is combined with the money from all the SN tournaments held throughout the season which runs from 1 June to 31 May. $1.75 of each $2 fee is returned to the respective division at the Southern National Am and Pro Championship. (The remaining $.25 is used for SN expenses such as purchasing SN bag tags, End of the Year Awards, etc) The following information is needed to help us get the information concerning your tournament out to the Southern National community. The asterisked items are needed to schedule the tournament. We understand that the rest of the information may not be available when you

Protected dates (no other SN tournaments to be scheduled without SN Board approval):
The SN Doubles Championship - the last full weekend in July (both Saturday and Sunday falling in July)
The SN Amateur Championship - two weekends before Labor Day Weekend
The SN Pro Championship - Labor Day weekend

As You see there was no date given and I explained to Jay that the last weekend of July was reserved for the SNDC over the phone. It was also shown very clearly in the guidelines that I sent Jay.

Re: Question
May 08, 2014 07:05AM
all I was asked to do was to submit the bid; period. what happened after that I had not a clue. when I told jay we got it he was very happy. but he had already been contacted by the board that bap was awarded the tournament. time lines after that you would have to discuss with one of 4 people. jay (retired; good luck with that) k.c., smoothie, or Bernie.

& BTW The SN has sanctioned another tournament in Jackson the last weekend of July.

Correct. That took place after the SNDC was scheduled for June 21-22 so there was no longer any reason to reserve that weekend at that point.

Re: Question

I was just stating a fact in response to your comment. Given the fact that you made a comment, I assumed that you were concerned over making sure everyone understood the facts of the situation. There is really no reason for anyone to give excuses. The situation is what it is at this point. It really doesn't matter who did what right or who did what wrong. It isn't going to change anything. I'm just interested in making the tournament as good as it can possibly be. If you need any assistance regarding anything pertaining to the tournament, let me know, Bernie.

Why award a city to host a championship with a bid like this? Did a 3rd grader write this bid?

Blue Angle Park, Pensacola FL
3 courses
we will offer up all 15 trailers and 7 one room cabins
r.v. camping as well as primitive/tent camping
plenty of family activitys swimming, fishing, picnicking, putt-putt golf, paintball, conv. store.

Best of luck Bern. I wouldn't suggest beach cruisers in the payout, LOL.

The host city scheduled the sndc on a weekend not reserved for them AND a weekend another tournament was scheduled, but the bod is the only ones being blamed? Smh

Re: Question
July 08, 2014 07:30PM
The BoD did request the SNDC be moved to the date that was set aside for it are another date that was not already taken. The response we received was that BAP is a military run facility and that date had been locked in. If we insisted it be moved to a different date, we would need to find another venue and TD to host it. The other tournaments also could not be moved, one because of the local festival it was planned around. Plus that tournament had been on the schedule for a full year in advance. Our hands were basically tied on the issue, and all we could do was setup up guidelines to insure this sort of situation could not repeat itself in the future.
