I lost a white Aviar at Inverness on Saturday.

It has my initials JEK and PDGA #(19226) on the bottom.

If anyone found it, I would really, really like to get it back.

Thanks.

I also lost a 150 Flick in tree on hole 4 George Ward and left a yellow snac star Whippet while practicing in field at Indiglo. It was right in open on fairway in open and neither werent turned in..... Had a blast even in the rain. Indiglo is one awesome challenging course!

I had an awesome time this weekend, had some pretty cool guys on my card every round! Indigo is going to be a top notch course in a few years when it gets beat down a little bit more. It was a very challenging yet fun course.

My only complaint is the very short lunch break Pool B got on Sunday. I only had 15-20 minutes to eat a sandwich and warm up

Lost a red Champion Valkyrie with a biohazard stamp at InDiGo on Friday, hole 5, I think.......hit my first ace with this disc and would LOVE to get it back. If anyone came across it, please IM me. I am willing to send $$ to get it back!!!!!

OH YEAH, Had a GREAT time. Very well organized. Player party was fun in the brew warehouse (thanks Good People). Courses were great and extremely challenging (I'm talking about you, InDiGo). Can't wait to find out where next year is going to be!!!! Thanks to everyone at Eat Sleep Disc!!!!

Re: 2012 - SN Am Championships - OFFICIAL THREAD
August 20, 2012 12:29PM
Yeah, there were a fwe logistical issues I noted. I will mention them now, not as a complaint but just good natured feedback. I'm very thankful for the effort and energy put out by the Birmingham crew and all the sponsors and I greatly enjoyed the weekend. I would go back to another event hosted by B'ham in a heartbeat!

1. Next tee signs, Greg Carter. It wasn't a big deal for the tournament, as you could follow the group ahead of you, but for those of us that got there a day or two early to warm up, we found ourselves occasionally wondering down bike/walking paths and searching for the next tee as there were multiple paths to follow. Might be helpful with Championship tourney's to remember that people will be showing up early to scout your courses.

2. Indigo. This course has great potential, but it bordered on dangerous with the steep slopes. I really felt bad for the older guys and gals and I know there were at least 2 injuries due to the steep terrain. I have no idea how you could fix this, but it is worth considering.

3. Too many blind shots = slow play. There were a lot of back ups at Carter and Indigo simply due to the incredible amount of blind shots. Blind shots are obviously part of the game, but limiting the number you utilize for a championship tournament is probably wise. Blind shots slow progress because you're not certain the hole is clear and guys may want to walk up the fairway to scout their line.

4. I'm not sure how it went for Pool A, but Pool B's players meeting Saturday morning started like this: "Ok everybody, glad to see you here, we're going to go over the OB's and get you out to your boxes." Really? This is a championship event, people have traveled a long way and invested a lot of time and money. Kick it up a notch! At least start with "I'd like to welcome everyone to the annual Southern National Amateur Championships....etc, etc." I know people will criticize this point because it sounds all "touchy feely," but it's a big, big tournament and a little grandstanding is very appropriate IMHO.

5. Opening prayer. Pool B's player's meeting was concluded with an opening prayer......that was the first opening prayer I can remember at a discgolf tournament. I am very happy for people who find comfort in religion but I do not think that a player's meeting is the appropriate place for it. Many, many DG'ers are not of the Christian religion or any religion, we should respect that and not make prayer a group activity at the player's meeting. If the TD wants to pray for the safety of the players for the weekend, that's fine. But he/she should do it privately. I feel certain that god will still listen to his plea, though it be made discreetly.

6. Closing ceremonies needs amplification! At big tournaments there are a lot of players and, as we all know, discgolfers have BIG mouths. It was really hard to hear any of the names being called out. Most parks have some sort of electricity available and I feel certain that there was an outlet at the pavilion Sunday. TD's, for big tournaments try to get some sort of PA, karaoke machine, something. If you can't get someone to loan you one you can rent them from a number of places for very little money. Again, people play all year, get hotels, spend lots of money, and travel a long way for Championship tournaments; don't gloss over the opening and closing ceremonies. I'm not expecting Bejing Olympics type stuff, but it should be a little more celebrated that your average tournament.

As I said at the beginning, I was very happy and appreciated everything the B'ham crew did. I only make this post in the spirit of helping us (SNDG) make proper corrections to make our sport and our championships even better than they already are. I hope that part of the message doesn't get lost. I hope that this doesn't start a flurry of angry posts by poor sports who are looking for something to complain about. And I hope that whatever discussion follows this post is done with tact and civility. If the following discussion devolves into a series of angry hate-filled posts I certainly do not condone them or identify with their sentiment.

Well I happen to have really enjoyed the prayer. Maybe non Christian golfers should respect that. If you didnt like the prayer you could have walked away! But its funny as Christians, you expect us to keep silent and respect you but in turn you dont repect us and our beliefs. If someone is talking about something I disagree with I will walk away.

Easy guys lol lets not start that debate.

Back on snac topic. As a member of pool A we had a great opening meeting. We had long rounds butbthat was to be expected an wanted in a championship format. Really no complaints for the courses other then 2. 1, indigondoes need some saftey messasures put in on some of the holes.. like the walk from 2-3. I couldn't imagine trying to walk that in any kind of wet weather. An 2, I wish we would of ended on a harder course. Having the lead going into Ward u weren't in any real risk of doing anything to screw that up. But if you went into the final with the lead in say indigo.. oh my u would of been nervous. Granted the field would not of been able to make up ground like Ward... but the errors u made on Ward was not nearly as costly as the errors you would of made in indigo.

That's bout all I have to say on it. Was my last am tourney an I enjoyed the hell out of it! Look forward to getting my but stomped in advanced this season.

PS. Typing on my phone so if any words don't look right ;) that's why lol.

You misunderstand me Head. I don't want Christians to be silent, and if another player wanted to pray or cross himself or whatever, I could care less. What if the TD had been Muslim and asked the group to join him in appealing to Allah for protection? What if he had been Pagan and asked the group to join him in the sacrifice of a small animal? What if he had been a Scientologist and asked us to join him in meditation to eradicate the ghost spirits that were contaminating our souls?

I don't think the organizers of a SN event (or any discgolf event) should ever hold a rite or ritual at a tournament that offers the non-religious or people of other religions with the option of A) conformity or B) isolation.

For the record, I did walk away (as did several others). And when it was all done, I was standing apart from most of my fellow discgolfers. Why put people in that awkward position when the appeal (prayer) could have just as easily been made to God in private? The answer to "why" it was made in public and not in private is also the reason that I found it off-putting.

So what did you do in school when they prayed or had a moment of silence? Or what about the pledge of allegiance? Did you walk out of the classroom?

I think it is a great thing that they prayed.

I really don't want to get into defending every strawman argument that gets raised, but needless to say, teachers didn't allow you to walk out of class when I was in school; plus I was in the religion back then, so I didn't care.

I'm good with a moment of silence. "Moments of silence" are great and allow the crowd to observe in their own way without feeling isolated.

If what comes out of this discussion is that TD's decide to substitute "moments of silence" for opening prayers I would find that to be an incredibly sensible comprimise.

I hate to belabor this point but God does hear an individuals prayers, right? So why does it need to be performed as a group ritual? Group rituals, by their very definition, isolate those who do not belong to the group. The group, in this case, was Discgolfers, not Christians.

We shouldn't infuse anything into the discgolf community that will isolate certain members. We don't stand for sexist, lude behavior because it would isolate female golfers. Likewise, we shouldn't have Christian group rituals led by tournament directors because, in spite of the intent, they isolate golfers of different beliefs.

We should maintain a conformity of behavior that makes all people of every sex, race, and creed feel welcome. We should be in the business of doing things that unify and strengthen the discgolf community, not segment it or isolate certain members.

Pray on every teebox, listen to christian music in the parking lot, carry a bible in your bag; I don't care. But don't ask the discgolf community to join you in your religious ceremonies.

Smoking weed and drinking does not welcome a lot of folks, and is one reason why this sport can not be taken seriously......I think that should be done away with before prayer before the round...

I agree with Dustin. My first tournament I almost never came back because of how many people were literally drunk. And even if someone says " do you care if i smoke" thats still not cool cuz most will not want to piss the other person off by saying yes . i care. Getting off subject but just wanted to say it.

I agree that marijuana usage and drinking do isolate some folks as well. So does profanity. Which is why even though I usually cuss like a sailor, I try to curb it completely or do it under my breath during tournament rounds. Just trying to be considerate to the fact that I'm playing with people of different backgrounds and beliefs. So see, Head, I do respect you and your beliefs :)
